Nationalist victory in Italian election bad news for the LGBTQ community

Giorgia Meloni and the coalition led by the Brothers of Italy have campaigned against any moved towards LGBTQ equality.

Giorgia Meloni has claimed victory in Italy’s elections. The rightwing coalition that she leads appears to have won a clear majority - ushering in Italy's most rightwing government since the facism that gripped the country during WWII.

Meloni - the leader of the Brothers of Italy party - will become Italy's first female prime minister. The surge in support for conservative and nationalist candidates indicates a significant move to the right for the country, and is a further indicator of a rising tide in rightwing nationalism across Europe.

Meloni has consistently advocated hardline views against LGBTQ equality.

Sad to see this in Italy. They need to keep a very close eye on this new elected official. She is dangerous.
