International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) 2014 in Asia

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) is the largest annual LGBT solidarity action and will take place on May 17th 2014. This years theme is 'Free Expression', and there's loads of events in the region, so find one near you to join.


The Rainbow Community Kampuchea (RoCK) and ASEAN SOGIE are organising the CamASEAN Gay Pride for this year’s International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 17 & 18 in Cambodia. The sessions are aimed towards acceptance and to raise awareness of LGBTI issues within the Cambodian society.

The Crossroads Centre and the Beijing Queer Film Festival are organising a four-day event for the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, with the support of the French embassy, DKT International Beijing and the EU Delegation.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is set to see a great variety of actions around the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia 2014. To mark IDAHOT in Hong Kong various groups (Pink Alliance, Pink Season, Amnesty International Hong Kong , and the  Transgender Resource Center – TGR) will be coming together to present an ‘IDAHOT Event Series’, including a candlelight vigil on Friday 16th May.

The International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia will be celebrated in 7 different cities in Indonesia. Amongst the diverse actions are public lectures, movie screenings, photostory competition and a pride walk (march). The events will take place from May 8 to 22. The events are coordinated by Suara Kita (Our Voice), an LGBT organization that focus on journalism and media in Indonesia. They are trying to involve more groups from tehir network in order to make IDAHOT and LGBT rights more visible and into a mainstream issue.

The Philippines

A range of events in the country include a joint effort, the Proj8 LGBT Association, the Quezon City Pride Council and the LGBTS Church Inc present “Grand Flores de Mayo Pride Festival 2014″ on May 17th at 5pm at Brgy. Also, The LGBT student group EU Bahaghari is organising a number of actions to commemorate and promote IDAHOT and this year’s focus on Freedom of Expression.

On May 17, there will be the event ‘I will survive Homophobia’ which will be focussing on the issue of discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Singapore.

South Korea

The Capital of South Korea Seoul will see different actions. So far, there will be an exhibition campaign about queer childhood, there are plans for a singing and line dance flash mob and a campaign about transgender Human Rights will be launched in the Itaewon area around Seoul.

Several organisations and coalitions are in the midst of organising actions for May 17, 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand. The events will include a campaign for schools and universities around Bangkok targeting bullying and violence against LGBT youth, a ‘Power Rainbow Workshop’ for students, a training about Freedom of Expression to Gender Recognition, an event by students and lecturers of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the Thammasat University and a campaign to promote Freedom of Expression. In addition to School Rainbow event, UNESCO Asia Pacific with its headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, is commemorating the Day by further activities, drawing attention to the issue of bullying on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in Thailand.

The Lobby Alliance for LGBT Human Rights has planned an event on May 17 to remember all the victims of Homophobia and Transphobia with the demonstration ‘From the Grave to the World’. In order to remember and honour, they will stand in front of the Presidential Hall in Taipei city with 100 tombstones, each engraved with the somber and horrifying truth of our wrongful deaths: Killed by Homophobia and and Transphobia.
