France approves same-sex marriage and adoption law

France has become the 14th country to legalise same-sex marriage.

Despite violent street protests and opposition from conservative lawmakers, the French parliament on Tuesday voted to legalise same-sex marriage.

In a 331-to-225 final vote, the country's lower house National Assembly, where President Francois Hollande's Socialist party has an absolute majority, approved the marriage bill, which would also give same-sex couples the right to adopt.

Euronews reports:

Self-congratulatory applause erupted in the National Assembly where President Francois Hollande’s Socialists have an absolute majority. The bill passed by 331 votes to 225 against.

Some in the public gallery had to be forcibly removed after making clear their opposition to the law.

The bill has triggered often violent street protests and sparked a rise in homophobic attacks. Many people now want the issue to be subject to a referendum.

There was a very noxious an powerful anti-marriage mobilisation (300,000 people demonstrating against, once) and homophobic violence has strongly increased. Now the opposition will appeal to the Constitutional Council (something like the Supreme Court) and it is not to be taken for granted.

To muscle42-Please go back to your hole in the ground since you seem totally unable to comprehend gay rights and their fight for equal rights for the past 50 years; just to simply it for you, ' marriage rights ' as in same sex-marriages was on the agenda for many years. This is a progression,as opposed to regression in the fight for liberty and rights for all. Get it...maybe spend less time in the gym and more on human rights issues might get you up to speed to the 21st Century?
